Origin
Dictionaries treat the etymology as uncertain but point to joint. Dictionary.com dates the word to about 2000–05 and says it may be a local Philadelphia variant of joint. Wikipedia and the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia describe jawn as a Philadelphia pronunciation and broader use of joint that had already become a general “thing” noun in New York hip-hop and related slang, then shifted in form and scope in Philly (including via African American Vernacular English phonology, per the Encyclopedia).123
